About Us

Our Origins

STEMpunk Team #4531 started in 2012 as interest in the FIRST Robotics program grew in Manitowoc County. In part to the numerous Lego League teams in the county and also the success of Droid Rage #3381 in Valders. Arrow Guetschow set out to start a team in the northern part of the county to help expand the scope of FIRST and its vision of

"transforming out culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated and where young people dream of becoming science and technology leaders." --Dean Kamen, Founder

Thanks to the Mishicot School Disctrict, Orion Energy Systems, Nextera Energy and NASA we were able to form a new team and reach more young people interested in learning Science, Technology, Engineering and Math skills along with communication, accounting and numerous other skills needed to make a team successful. With a hands on approach, it is our mission to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build job skills and inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self confidence, communication, and leadership.

The Name "STEMpunk"

"STEM" is an acronym for the fields of study in the categories of
Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. It has become commonplace in education discussions as a reference to the shortage of skilled workers in these areas.

Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction that typically features steam-powered machinery with elements from the industrial revolution including gears, brass and copper. Think of a Jules Verne novel with Victorian Era clothing, tinkering with gadgets and some mad science involved.

For the teams purpose, we combined both of the above elements into a Science, Technology, Engineering & Math education incorporating the fashions & themes of steampunk to form a new FIRST Robotics team with an incredible fashion sense (along with a pretty cool robot)!
